The Saint-Émilion Grands Crus Classés
The Grands Crus Classés classification is based on a number of criteria, including the quality of the wines, the reputation of the châteaux and viticultural practices. There are two main categories: “Grands Crus Classés” and “Premiers Grands Crus Classés”, which are further subdivided into “A” and “B”. The châteaux classified as “A” are considered to be the best in the appellation.
The main grape varieties used in these wines are Merlot, Cabernet Franc and, to a lesser extent, Cabernet Sauvignon. Saint-Émilion wines are often characterised by their richness, complexity and ageing potential.
